Lee Sedol falls to Yu Bin
Lee Sedol's fighting style failed to make a significant enough kill against Yu Bin's solid play in the first round of the 5th Chunlan Cup.

When did Cisco buy Linksys?
I did not think that I had been living in hole in 2003, but I had not heard that Cisco had broken with its unerring commitment to the high-end networking marketplace and bought Linksys, champion of home networking tech. Imagine my surprise when I found out that this anouncement had been made in March 2003!

A pleasant relief from the commercialism of the season is joining family and loved ones for a festive meal. (No, I am not in the picture.)

Isenberg's 2003 US Copyright Law Roundup
Attorney Doug Iseberg of GigaLaw has published an interesting review article of the year in US Internet law. Well worth the read. In addition, Isenberg has written a thoughtful column on his feelings about Amazon's Search Inside the Book feature considering he has a book for sale there.

Canadian Ruling on Web Music (free but must register)
It is official, Canadians can download copyrighted music from p2p networks, but not upload. Further, the Canadian solution to the problem is to levy tarrifs on media and technology involved in storing such music to compensate copyright holders.
Korean Giants Tied
In a classic match of old vs. young two of the great living baduk/go/weiqi masters have tied up the best of five Korean Myungin tournament two games to two. Lee Changho (Korean home page), 9 dan, is 28 years old and arguably the strongest player in the world. Cho Hunhyun, 9 dan, is 50 years old and the first Korean go player to hold all of the major international titles. The game record can also be found here.

Canada's Copyright Laws should be the same as the US', Right?
The CRIA (Canadian Recording Industry Association) is launching an ad campaign to stir up fear, uncertanty, and doubt among parents over their kids' file swapping. This comes hot on the heals of the current Canadian Supreme Court case attempting to levy royalty fees against ISPs for all of the file sharing that their users undertake. I hope that the Canadian version of fair dealing weathers this storm.

Literary Entertainment from Japan
You enjoy manga? You enjoy anime? Why not try out some popular Japanese fiction translated to English? Vertical is betting that successful Japanese novels, like other forms of popular entertainment from Japan, can be commercially viable in the English speaking world. (OK, they have some manga too.)
Some of the notable titles that Vertical has made available in English are:

  • Books 1 and 2 (of 89) of the fantasy epic The Guin Saga by Kaoru Kurimoto
  • Volumes 1 and 2 (of 8) of Osamu Tezuka's (of Astroboy fame) manga on the life of the Buddha
  • Kenzo Kitakata's brilliant yakuza novel Ashes, and
  • Kuji Suzuki's Ring, the basis of the popular Gore Verbinski horror film of the same name.

One notable feature of Vertical's efforts is the brilliant book cover design by Chip Kidd

I created my own blog today.
